About Holistic Nutrition
It is no secret that our diet plays a crucial role in how the body looks and feels and whether it stays healthy. Despite our efforts to improve our nutritional status, many of us still find ourselves confused and misguided as to what our daily meals should consist of as we struggle with digestive disturbances, unrecognized food allergies, weight gain and even chronic illness. Why is that?
In today's fast-paced, high-demand world, we have become a culture focused on convenience. When hunger strikes, it's much easier to open a can, unwrap a package, or pop a lid than it is to actually prepare a fresh meal. Moreover, we have emerged into a generation of gullible consumers. Our government regulated food guide pyramid—along with the billion dollar marketing industry—has created a great myth as to which foods are actually good for us; thus, fueling the silent demolition of our health. Sadly, Western medicine has dismissed a direct link between malnutrition and disease leaving many afflicted individuals deprived of nutritional counseling while addressing their symptoms with pharmaceuticals alone. Though they have their merit, prescription drugs rarely yield long term improvement and may even complicate one's health.
Fortunately, there is a new movement emerging. Food has taken centre stage as many are looking to nutrition to not only feed their bodies, but to attain healing through the nutrients found in their food. Holistic nutrition is an emerging modality that consciously considers the characteristics of food and its direct effects on the body. Through this realization, one can understand that the quality of food eaten affects the degree of well-being experienced. Only LIVE, NATURAL, and GOOD QUALITY food can produce the degree of health that nurtures body, mind and soul—the very essence of (w)holistic nutrition.
